VISITING TOFINO?

Tofino Whale Watching Question

Thank you for your question, Joanna. While you can see whales in Tofino year round, there are some times of the year that are better than others. Orca whales are transient in this area, so it's anyone's guess when they will come by for a snack. Humpback whales are not very well understood in this area, but they are often around in the spring and summer months.

The best time of year for whale watching is mid March, when over 20,000 grey whales migrate right past our beaches and coastline. Another good time is through August and September when you will see grey whales, possibly humpbacks, and if you are lucky, orcas snacking on sea lions.

Bear watching is best June through August. That time of year the bears come down to the low tide line in search of small crabs and seaweed. Watching black bears from the safety and comfort of a boat is spectacular!

I hope this helps.

Warm Regards,
